PAC Con is a yearly gathering for performing arts groups to learn, share, and build community. 

Save the date! Some events will be mandatory for groups under the PAC umbrella.

Thursday, 9/23

Working With Alumni (4:00pm-4:50pm)
Join us for an interactive session where we will explore best practices on how to work with your organization’s alumni! Learn more about Penn Alumni Relations and the resources available to students and student organizations. We will share tips and ideas to engage and leverage your alumni network through events and outreach.

PAC Pre-Production Meeting [M] (4:00pm-5:20pm)
Review venue rules, learn backstage COVID policies, and develop a checklist for the work leading up to your show. Mandatory for the the Producer/Chair of PAC groups who are producing shows in the fall semester. 

Rehearsal Room Wellness (5:30-6:20pm)
For directors, SMs, choreographers, section leaders, and anyone else who runs the room! Our multidisciplinary panel will talk about tactics that incorporate a culture of care.

Backstage Cleaning Procedures (5:30-6:20pm)
Learn the ins and outs of navigating backstage during COVID.

Grab ‘n’ Go from Lil Pop Shop (6:30-7:00pm)
Pick up your gourmet popsicle from this West Philly favorite! Does not fulfill PAC attendance requirements.

 

Friday, 9/24

Campus Arts Tour (12:00-1:30pm and 12:30-2:00pm)
This event is specially designed for first- and second- year students to help you get familiar with campus arts centers! Upperclass students will lead tours across campus, introducing you to these exciting spaces and the staff who support them. Featuring Platt House, the PAC Shop, Kelly Writers House, Penn Live Arts, Sachs Hub, the Institute of Contemporary Art, & the Penn Museum.

Drop-In Chat (12:00pm-1:50pm)
Gather round the table to brainstorm, catch up on news, or just say hi! Peers and Staff can help you work through ideas about your group’s new initiatives, contingency planning, or whatever else is on your mind. Bring questions, or just come for the conversation!

Improv Interview Techniques (2:00pm-2:50pm and 3:00pm-3:50pm)
In this session, we will use different improvisational techniques and games to learn how to get out of our heads and respond honestly in interviews. We’ll pay particular attention to how to answer “getting to know you” questions and how to answer questions you weren’t prepared for.

Don’t Drop the Mic (2:00-2:20pm)
Learn basic sound setup including how to set up microphones for your productions. 

Safe in Sound [M] (2:30-2:50pm)
Learn proper care and sanitization techniques for the different styles of microphones. Mandatory for any groups who will be using microphones in ANY pre-approved unmasked settings. Please send a group member who will be responsible for coordinating mics during these events.

PAC Treasurer Training [M] (3:00pm-3:50pm)
We’ll run through all the rules and best practices for your group’s expenses, sales, and documentation.

PAC Shop Orientation (4:00pm-4:50pm)
Come explore the PAC Shop and learn who we are and how we can help with technical elements for your productions.

Grab ‘n’ Go: Blaze Pizza (5:30pm)
RSVP to reserve a personal pizza for the road.

Open Class Series: Dance & Drumming with African Rhythms (5:30pm)
West African and Afro-Cuban dance and percussion taught by professionals, for all levels! Every Friday in Platt 175. No registration necessary.

Saturday, 9/25

Ten Thousand Birds at Morris Arboretum (Time TBA)
Penn Live Arts presents Alarm Will Sound: Ten Thousand Birds at the Morris Arboretum on Saturday, September 25 at 1 PM and 4 PM. The “unusually versatile, reliably exhilarating new-music ensemble” (The New York Times) Alarm Will Sound makes its Penn Live Arts debut, returning to our city after a 12-year hiatus with the local premiere of Ten Thousand Birds by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy® Award-winning composer John Luther Adams. This experiential, open-ended collection of pieces is based on native birdsong, encompassing a range of colors and instrumentation and newly informed by actual migration patterns tracked at the Morris Arboretum. The audience roves freely around the space and the performers, experiencing the music from many perspectives as human creativity and natural phenomena blur. Explore two Penn cultural centers together! Transportation and admission for Penn students will be free for this excursion.

Saw & Order (1:00pm-1:50pm)
Come get certified to use the PAC Shop saws. This session is for anyone planning to build in the shop.

Beyond Hazing (1:00pm-1:50pm)
A student-led presentation about hazing prevention, including stories and practical tips for how to peacefully intervene when we witness hazing, how to report it and discuss how we can reorient our understanding of hazing as a spectrum of problematic behaviors

Lead & Follow (2:00pm-2:50pm)
How do we pass on institutional knowledge about operations and traditions to future boards? This session is open to current and outgoing board members, as well as newer students who are interested in board positions!

Community Service (2:00pm-2:50pm)
Find ways to engage and interact with the West Philadelphia and University City neighborhoods though our service and mentoring initiatives.

Equity in the Arts with PAPA, Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists (3:00pm-4:20pm)
What can we do to dismantle and re-envision the structures of artmaking with a new focus on wellness, equity, and trust? In this workshop, led by the artists, makers, and leaders of PAPA, we’ll seek ways to guide our future selves and each other emphatic collaboration, healthy boundaries, and better intentionality in art.

Sunday, 9/26

New to PAC (3:00pm-3:50pm)
Welcome back – or in this case, welcome! PAC-Exec board will help you get the lay of the land, including spaces, events, and all those acronyms.

Yoga (4:00pm-5:00pm)
Stretch out with friends after a long week! This yoga class is free for PAC Con registrants and open to all levels of experience.
